As a small family business, we at Spirit of the Wildwood, LLC are passionate about sharing the wild beauty and rich history of our northern Great Lakes homeland with you. It’s our hope that those who understand and also love this land will find encouragement and meaning in what we offer at Wildwood Studios and Wildwood Publishers.
With the controversies surrounding the emergence of AI, we want to be clear on what our policies are regarding the use of AI in our creative work. Even though our society as a whole is lagging in developing clear and ethical guidelines, we at SWW believe it’s important to have them. Thus, after several brainstorming sessions, we came up with the following rules for our business:
- we will not be using AI for our actual writings; they will always be 100% human-written, and we take full responsibility for our words;
- in any creative artwork, craft or merchandise we sell, we pledge to be fully transparent about our use of AI as a tool if and when it’s used;
- any AI images we use for book covers, image inserts for novels, merchandise, etc. will be pulled together and designed by the SWW artist doing the graphic design and working with the AI images as we would clipart in the graphic design process;
- since we enjoy doing our own drawing, painting, and photography, we greatly value original art that makes no use of AI, and will be sure the SWW artist is credited for their work;
- as a general rule, images for non-fiction works (collections of essays, coloring books about wildlife, short pamphlets, etc.) will not use AI;
- if AI is used for a specific publication, Wildwood Publishers will place information about it on the detailed copyright page of said publication;
- if AI is used for specific crafts, art, merchandise, etc., Wildwood Studio will have information regarding it as part of the specific product’s display information.
